Marsh Waterfowl Hunting Tips

Marshes can be some of the best places to hunt ducks and geese, but success often comes down to scouting, concealment, and decoy placement. Use these simple tips to build a more effective marsh waterfowl setup.

1. Hunt the Water’s Edge

Focus on the edges of open water, cattails, reeds and flooded vegetation. Place duck decoys in the water and leave room for birds to land.

2. Mix Duck & Goose Decoys

If both species are using the area, create a mixed duck and goose spread. Keep duck decoys in the water and goose decoys along nearby shorelines or dry ground.

3. Create a Landing Zone

Don't overcrowd the water with decoys. Leave an open pocket where you want birds to finish, preferably positioned with the wind at your back.

4. Use Natural Cover

Marsh birds are quick to spot movement. Hide in cattails, reeds or natural vegetation and keep movement to a minimum.

5. Adjust Your Spread

Water levels, wind and bird patterns can change throughout the season. If birds aren't finishing where you want them, move your decoys and adjust your setup.
