High Flyers and Good Company: A Sandusky Field Goose Hunt

High Flyers and Good Company: A Sandusky Field Goose Hunt

There’s a certain kind of peace that comes with mornings like this. The air cold enough to see your breath, headlights glowing through the fog, and the sound of trucks crunching down a farm lane before sunrise. In Sandusky, Ohio, the fields were quiet but full of promise—another morning to chase geese with good friends and reliable gear from The Fowl Depot.

We set up long before first light. Decoys in place, blinds brushed in, coffee steaming in hand. As dawn broke, the horizon came alive. The first flights appeared—massive migrating flocks riding the north wind, stretching across the sky in endless lines. Thousands of birds traded over the cornfields, their calls echoing like distant thunder.

They were high flyers, though. Most stayed well above range, some teasingly passing over the spread before pushing on south. A few gave us hope, wings cupped for a moment before catching another current and climbing back into the sky. That’s hunting. You can scout the fields, set the perfect spread, and still be reminded that the birds make the final call.

But truthfully—it didn’t matter. The hunt was still everything we came for. The quiet moments in the blind, the laughter, the smell of corn stubble and mud, and the sunrise painting gold over frost-covered decoys. Those are the things that stay with you.

Even without a heavy strap, it was a good morning to be out there—breathing cold air, watching the migration roll through, and soaking in God’s creation in all its beauty.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not always about the shots you take. Sometimes, it’s about the stillness, the fellowship, and the reminder that being out there is the real reward.
