Early Season Honker Tips

Early goose season is here, and early-season honkers can be some of the most predictable birds of the year—if you find their routine.

Scout First: Find where geese are feeding and where they’re roosting. Early-season birds often stick to a consistent pattern, so being in the right field can make all the difference.

Keep Your Spread Simple: You don’t need hundreds of decoys. A realistic spread of 2–4 dozen decoys can be plenty, especially when hunting smaller family groups.

Use Realistic Calling: Early-season geese are usually vocal, but don’t overdo it. Match the volume and intensity of the birds you’re seeing.

Concealment Matters: Early-season geese have plenty of daylight and sharp eyes. Brush your blind well and stay still until the birds commit.

Hunt the Weather: A cool front, changing wind, or cloudy morning can help get birds moving. Watch conditions and adjust your setup accordingly.

Most importantly, hunt where the birds want to be. Good scouting, a clean setup, and realistic calling can make your early-season goose hunt much more successful.
